Sui Prepares for Quantum Threat with Two NIST-Approved Signature Schemes

As concerns over quantum computing threats continue to grow, blockchain platforms are increasingly unveiling security upgrades, with Sui becoming the latest platform to join the trend. According to a recent announcement, Sui is planning to integrate two signature schemes approved by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This will enable user to secure their accounts and high-value assets against potential threats.

Sui’s move comes as the crypto industry is taking steps to protect itself against future quantum computing threats, even though such threats do not exist today. With this upgrade, the blockchain intends to provide a better way to safeguard its assets without changing its existing recovery phrases or wallet addresses.

Sui adopts post-quantum cryptography

Sui is strengthening its blockchain security by integrating two NIST-approved post-quantum signature schemes. This upgrade will let users switch to quantum-safe authentication. What is more exciting about this approach is that users can still keep their existing recovery phrases and wallet addresses. The Sui team noted:

“Sui was built for cryptographic agility, which means signature schemes can be added without disturbing the fundamentals of the network. That property is the difference between a migration and a rebuild, and it is why the work described here is a routine protocol-feature update rather than a change to consensus or existing state.”

As part of this upgrade, the platform is expected to launch ML-DSA-65 as the native signature scheme for everyday user accounts. Also, SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s will be introduced for high-value smart contract vaults. With the introduction of these schemes, Sui can secure its blockchain wallets and digital assets in the future against quantum computing risks.

Why is quantum-safe cryptography needed?

Sui developers added that even if quantum computers are now far from reality, they will one day become a serious threat to the entire blockchain ecosystem. In the future, according to Sui, quantum computers could use Shor’s algorithm to break the cryptography that currently protects most blockchains.

The team also warned against the risks of “harvest now, forge later” attacks. In these attacks, the attackers collect publicly available blockchain keys today and store them until quantum computers become powerful in the future.

Further, Sui cited research from Google Quantum AI, suggesting that future fault-tolerant quantum computers could recover a private key from a public key in just a few minutes. They need to use fewer than 500,000 physical qubits for this recovery.

Crypto industry ramps up post-quantum security effort

Sui isn’t the only blockchain that has unveiled its post-quantum security measures. Although the exact timeline for practical quantum computers remains unknown, experts believe that they are not too far from becoming a reality. For instance, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has recently projected that quantum computers will be available in the next three to four years. In May, BNB Chain tested post-quantum transaction signatures. The blockchain showed that quantum-resistant cryptography can work with existing wallets. In July, CoinCodex reported on Starknet’s three-phase security transition roadmap. Other platforms like Stellar and Algorand have also taken similar initiatives to secure the blockchains from quantum computing threats.
