$193B Petrobras Taps Cardano to Track Sustainable Fuel Claims

Cardano Petrobras partnership

Key highlights:

  • Petrobras is tinkering with Cardan to track renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel
  • The SAF project aims to prevent double-counting of environmental benefits through blockchain certificates
  • Cardano price dipped amid the reports but 30-day charts are up by 25%

Brazilian state-controlled energy giant Petrobas is testing

The system also includes a passenger-facing application. Per the report, travelers can input their destination and departure airports to calculate a corresponding SAF allocation and receive a certificate linking the allocation to the underlying fuel certificate.

Meanwhile, the second project applies blockchain tracking to Petrobaras’ Diesel R, a fuel containing renewable material. The model will create checkpoints across the value chain, converting information into an immutable record of the fuel’s lifecycle.

In terms of use cases, the data will help companies trace information used in Scope 3 emissions reporting, covering indirect emissions across an organization’s value chain.

“As value chains become more complex, proving where environmental data comes from, how  it moves and who can rely on it becomes critical,” said Rafael Fraga, LATAM Business Development Lead at the Cardano Foundation. “Public blockchain gives us the opportunity to make that trust part of the system by design, providing industries with a shared, verifiable foundation for the next generation of energy markets.”

Petrobras expands blockchain research

Both projects build on an existing relationship between Petrobras, the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio. Collaborations between the entities began in 2023, with the partnership with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs expanding into renewable fuel applications.

Both Petrobras applications remain in the research and development stage. The announcement did not disclose a commercial deployment timeline or the volume of fuels that will be covered by the systems.

Zooming out, the Cardano Foundation is expanding its portfolio of real-world blockchain applications in Brazil. Amid the rise of institutional catalysts, analysts say ADA price is testing a key level that will determine its near-term movement. Cardano is currently trading at the $0.24 mark after a 1% decline over the last day. However, on the 30-day charts, ADA price is up by an impressive 25%, propped up by a streak of ecosystem fundamentals.
