Zcash Gets a New Privacy Layer as Nym Mixnet Goes Live in ZEC Wallets

The privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash is getting another layer of protection as Nym’s mixnet goes live on the network. With this integration, ZEC users can now protect their network activity, including IP addresses and transaction traffic. The move adds network-level safeguards to the blockchain’s existing privacy features.

Nym Mixnet brings network-level privacy to Zcash

Decentralized privacy network Nym has integrated its mixnet technology into Zcash wallets. The project stated:

“Today Nym is proud to share that it has completed its Zcash Community Grant, and the work is live where it matters most: the Nym mixnet is now live inside Zcash wallets.”

Nym’s mixnet is a system that routes and mixes users’ internet traffic, making it difficult to trace activity back to a specific IP address. Thus, it helps hide network-level information such as IP addresses and traffic patterns.

As the platform noted, Nym and the ZEC community intend to combine two layers of protection for the Zcash network. With the latest move, they envision bringing privacy on both the blockchain and network levels. In detail, Zcash’s shielded transactions already hide the information about the sender, receiver, and the transaction amount. At the same time, Nym’s mixnet adds another layer of privacy by hiding the identity and network details of the person involved in the transaction.

Nym builds tools to protect Zcash network activity

Interestingly, Nym has developed some tools as part of this development. The tools allow Zcash wallet traffic to pass through its mixnet. This makes it harder for someone monitoring the network to identify users based on their IP addresses, timing, or traffic patterns.

Reportedly, Nym released several open-source tools that can be used by developers depending on the type of Zcash traffic they need to protect. It includes tools for routing wallet connections through the mixnet, protecting chain synchronization, and reducing identifiable traffic patterns.

Ironwood migration highlights the need for more privacy

Significantly, the recent Ironwood migration has underscored the emergency of introducing more privacy to the Zcash network. During the migration, the amount of ZEC moved was made public by design. This means that if a wallet broadcasts the migration without network-level protection, its IP address could potentially be linked to the ZEC.

This sparked a major privacy concern for ZEC users. Although Zcash protects transaction details on the blockchain, network information like the IP address remains public. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox stated,

“For every user, the number one most important issue is having network-level privacy (i.e., Tor or Nym) before migrating.”

Thus, this issue is addressed by the integration of Nym’s mixnet into Zcash. Working with Zcash wallet developers, Nym is bringing this protection layer directly into wallets.

The news of Nym’s mixnet starting to become integrated with Zcash wallets has led to a substantial surge in the price of the NYM token. At the time of writing, Nym is displaying a +33% daily gain. Today’s surge has extended NYM’s monthly rally to a whopping +106%.
