NEAR Intents defends its permissionless model

The decision to stop the Bitget-linked transfers has also revived debate over what “permissionless” means for cross-chain protocols.

Shevchenko argued that a permissionless blockchain does not require every application or liquidity provider built on it to process every transaction. NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin similarly argued that permissionless access to a blockchain does not mean individual applications must facilitate transactions involving known stolen assets.

The position differs from THORChain’s approach to the Bitget theft. THORChain has maintained that its infrastructure does not selectively censor individual transactions, while NEAR Intents has chosen to use its SHIELD system to identify and reject transactions associated with known illicit flows.

Meanwhile, Bitget has begun reopening withdrawals in phases after the security incident, with BTC withdrawals restored on September 28 and additional assets scheduled to resume over the following days.
