‘Don’t have the discipline’: Ex-GOP staffer scoffs at pricey Trump deportation plan

A powerful conservative communications strategist doesn’t believe Republicans will be able to come up with the cash for President-elect Donald Trump’s massive deportation plans, he said Wednesday.

Brendan Buck, onetime press secretary to former House Speaker John Boehner, appeared on MSNBC Wednesday to discuss Trump’s potential to streamline campaign promises that will come with hefty price tags.

“The immigration stuff is where I’ve got my eye,” Buck said. “[If] Donald Trump wants a bunch of money or judges or to help with rounding up illegal immigrants, I can’t imagine Democrats will be useful or interested in helping to pass that kind of thing.”

Democratic support will prove crucial to passing major spending bills that require 60 votes in the Senate, Buck argued.

Buck argued Trump will also face problems in the House of Representatives, despite a Republican majority, because of current Speaker Mike Johnson.

“You’re frankly going to need Democrats to help you pass anything that spends money in the House,” said Buck. “That’s the one area where Kevin McCarthy and Mike Johnson have both shown they don’t have the discipline within the conference to pass anything on their own.”

Buck added, “They always had to go to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the Democratic leader, and get help for votes.”
