Chainlink’s Andrew McCormick On Tokenization: It’s All About Freedom

By Elizabeth Licorish

This week, Chainlink Labs’ Head of Institutional and Market Development, Andrew McCormick, joined Taking Stock host J.D. Durkin live on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange to discuss why Wall Street is getting on board with tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).

McCormick, who previously spent 15 years in traditional finance at Morgan Stanley, E*Trade, and eToro, joined Chainlink to help build a better, more efficient financial system onchain. The goal is to democratize access to financial products with 24/7 peer-to-peer transactions that take today’s T+3 settlement all the way to T+0.

“Media, emails, IM – they’re not just 9 to 5 during a weekday. They’re 24/7. Our money should be the same thing.”

Chainlink’s industry-standard oracle infrastructure unlocks an $867 trillion market opportunity for RWAs from cash to foreign currencies, money market funds, equities, and consumer credit. The Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) allows institutions to seamlessly connect with onchain finance through their legacy infrastructure, while Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) enables assets to move between chains with institutional-grade security.

McCormick said interest in tokenized assets has accelerated dramatically in just the past few years.

“Two years ago, three years ago, there was a lot of skepticism. But I think Wall Street, banks, financial firms recognize this can make our existing systems faster, more efficient, and lower risk. That got people’s attention and it’s gone from ideas and brainstorming to real-life production platforms now.”

But there’s still a long way to go – from several hundred billion dollars currently tokenized onchain to a projected $4 trillion in adoption by 2030. Imagining the industry’s growth as a nine-inning baseball game, McCormick estimates we’re at the top of the second inning.

“We’re in the early days, but the market out there is massive and endless.”

He believes tokenization is a win-win for firms that can reduce their risk and collateral requirements as well as investors who will have better access to and control over their assets.

“I love this part of the story because I think it’ll give us all more freedom over our money,” he said.

“In a world of tokenization, you can [transact] when you want, with whom you want, and it’s all about freedom. I think that’s a win for everybody.
