Crypto Enters “Most Significant Week of 2026” As Traders Hold Their Breath For 36 Hours

Key highlights:

  • Bitcoin faces a major 36-hour test as the Fed, US Senate, and Bank of Japan prepare to deliver key decisions that can drive volatility.
  • Markets expect a Fed rate hike and a BOJ hike, raising concerns about tighter liquidity and potential yen carry-trade unwind.
  • The CLARITY Act is also a key catalyst for cryptocurrencies this week.

Digital asset traders are bracing themselves for three major catalysts that can reshape the cryptocurrency market within 36 hours. Investors have their eyes peeled on the US Federal Reserve, the US Senate, and the Bank of Japan for key decisions poised to trigger major market volatility.

CLARITY Act vote sets the tone

The US Senate will hold a cloture vote on the CLARITY Act on Tuesday, a high-stakes event that will determine

Investors will have their eyes peeled for what comes after the hike. The Federal Open Market Committee will release its Summary of Economic Projections and dot plot alongside the decision, giving traders a clearer indication of how aggressively the central bank intends to respond to persistent inflation.

A hike paired with dovish projections for 2027 will be received differently from a hike accompanied by signals of two additional increases. The distinction will determine whether Bitcoin’s recent strength reflects genuine demand or the effects of short covering and liquidity conditions.

Bitcoin has gained over 20% from its summer lows, with spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recording modest inflows since then.

BOJ can trigger a liquidity shock

The final major variable comes from Japan, where markets expect the Bank of Japan to raise its policy rate to 1.25%, a level not seen since 1995. At press time, the probability of a hike hovers between 85% and 97%, amid a raft of macroeconomic pressures on the central bank.

For cryptocurrency traders, the concern is the yen carry trade. Investors have typically leaned on cheap yen funding to buy higher-return assets, including cryptocurrencies. Higher Japanese rates increase the cost of that strategy and can reduce global liquidity.

Back in August 2024, a BOJ rate increase contributed to a sharp yen move and broader risk-off reaction. Bitcoin tumbled from $65,00 to $50,000 within days, a steep 23% decline.

This time, the market faces a more unusual setup. Both the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan can both tighten monetary policy within 48 hours, creating conditions for a carry-trade unwind if the yen strengthens sharply.

Bitcoin’s reaction would likely come in through equities and global liquidity rather than a change in crypto fundamentals. For traders, USD/JPY could therefore become one of the most important indicators to watch.
