  • The beta launch is just two weeks away from release
  • Wikipedia’s long-time critic now builds its boldest rival

Elon Musk has confirmed that the first beta version of Grokipedia, an open-source knowledge project from his company xAI, will launch in just two weeks.

He calls it a response to what he describes as “lies” and “half-truths” spreading across existing information platforms.

On social media, Musk said that “version 0.1 of the early beta” would be released exactly 14 days from now. His post was a direct reply to a discussion about xAI’s growing suite of AI-powered projects.

Grokipedia was first mentioned during a livestream at The All-In Podcast Summit in September, where Musk revealed that the idea came from his AI assistant Grok, which already checks facts across sources like Wikipedia pages, documents, and PDFs.

According to Musk, Grok doesn’t just verify accuracy — it rewrites content to reflect what it believes to be the most complete version of the truth.

Host David Sacks suggested turning the idea into a standalone product. Musk responded, “I’ll talk to the team.” Less than a week later, Grokipedia became a reality in development.

Why Musk is taking on Wikipedia

Musk’s long-running feud with Wikipedia is no secret. He has accused the platform of bias, censorship, and political slant, claiming that it no longer represents balanced information.

In late 2023, he even joked about paying $1 billion if Wikipedia changed its name to “Dikipedia” — a dig at what he called its “ideological bias.”

More recently, he revived the joke after venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya described Wikipedia as a “massive psychological operation.”

This criticism echoes what former Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger said in a September interview with Tucker Carlson, alleging that administrators often block opposing viewpoints.

xAI’s expanding vision

Musk has hinted that Grokipedia is only the beginning. He revealed that xAI plans to release an AI-powered game by the end of next year — suggesting that the company’s mission goes beyond fact-checking to reshaping digital experiences altogether.

If Grokipedia succeeds, it could mark a turning point for the way we consume, verify, and trust information online—placing the future of truth in the hands of AI.
