EMURGO, the commercial arm of the $20 billion Cardano blockchain project, has partnered with digital payments firm Wirex to launch the Cardano Card, a next-generation crypto Visa card. Revealed during the Cardano Summit 2025 in Berlin, the card aims to bridge the gap between traditional banking services and on-chain financial applications.

The Cardano Card is natively integrated into the Wirex app and is available to its global user base of over six million people in 130 countries. It supports over 685 cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, including ADA, BTC, ETH and USDC, enabling seamless spending wherever Visa is accepted. EMURGO CEO Phillip Pon commented:

“Partnering with Wirex as the issuer of the Cardano Card is more than just a crypto card launch. It delivers a huge boost for Cardano’s visibility in the banking world and merges real-world utility with onchain utility.”

Boosting ADA’s role in DeFi and payments

The Cardano Card comes with a suite of financial features accessible through the Wirex platform. Users can earn up to 8% crypto cashback, enjoy low foreign exchange fees, withdraw funds from ATMs, and tap into DeFi utilities such as crypto loans and yield-earning accounts. Profits from the card are also expected to support the Cardano Treasury.

The launch occurs as Cardano continues its efforts to move beyond its perception as a blockchain focused on speculative trading. Despite its high market capitalization, Cardano’s DeFi and payments ecosystem still trails leading competitors like Ethereum and Solana.

A non-custodial variant of the Cardano Card is coming in the future

The rollout of the Cardano Card will occur in two phases. The current version is a custodial solution managed through Wirex, but phase two will introduce a non-custodial variant by 2026. This future version will give users full control over their private keys while retaining access to loans, yields, and other DeFi functionalities.

Wirex co-founder Georgy Sokolov called the partnership a “major milestone” for Cardano, highlighting its commitment to “driving real-world adoption.”

The launch also reflects a broader industry trend, as traditional payment networks like Visa and Mastercard deepen their involvement in crypto. Visa has recently partnered with companies like Stripe’s Bridge and Paxos, while Mastercard has teamed up with Ripple, Ondo Finance, and Kraken.

As of 2025, over 31 million crypto wallets are used for daily transactions, pointing to a substantial and growing market for solutions like the Cardano Card.
