Bitget crypto exchange has pledged HK$12 million (US$1.54 million) to help families impacted by the devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po.
The tragedy unfolded on November 26, when a five-story blaze swept through several towers of the complex. According to the latest data, at least 128 people lost their lives, more than 70 others were injured, and over 900 residents were forced to evacuate. It marks one of Hong Kong’s most catastrophic residential fires in decades.
Authorities have opened a criminal and anti-corruption investigation into the building’s repair work and the materials used. Search and rescue operations continue, while families work urgently to find missing loved ones.
Donations distributed across three major charities
Bitget has entrusted three trusted Hong Kong charitable organizations to oversee the HK$12 million donation:
- Yan Chai Hospital will receive HK$5 million (US$640,000) to fund emergency medical care, treatment for victims, and family rehabilitation.
- The Salvation Army Hong Kong will receive HK$3.5 million (US$450,000) to provide temporary housing, financial assistance, and essential supplies.
- Po Leung Kuk will receive HK$3.5 million (US$450,000) to deliver psychological support and long-term care services.
Bitget emphasizes that each donation will be used transparently and purposefully, aligning with government emergency relief programs, temporary housing solutions, and ongoing safety inspections of residential buildings.
Holistic support for survivors
The structure of the relief fund is designed to address the full range of needs faced by affected families. Medical support includes emergency treatment and long-term rehabilitation. Financial assistance helps households that have lost homes or income. Psychological care aims to guide survivors through trauma and recovery.
Partner organizations will offer a comprehensive aid approach, from frontline medical care to community support, helping residents navigate both immediate challenges and long-term rebuilding.
Bitget expressed solidarity with Hong Kong during this difficult moment. The company extended condolences to all who lost loved ones in the Wang Fuk Court tragedy and shared hope that affected families can rebuild their lives and communities as swiftly as possible.
It’s worth noting that Bitget (whose native token BGB saw significant growth at the end of 2024) is not alone in its efforts, as many other crypto companies also pledged to help. The list includes some of the biggest crypto exchanges in the world, such as KuCoin, Gate, OKX, and Binance.
