Aiden Pleterski, the 27-year-old Canadian man who once called himself the “Crypto King,” is set to face a jury next week. The move is over fraud and money laundering charges connected to his former crypto investment business and the handling of millions of dollars from investors.
Although Pleterski had asked the court to delay the trial to find a lawyer, an Ontario judge rejected the request. Thus, he is supposed to present himself during the four-week trial in Toronto. The proceedings are expected to begin on Monday.
Crypto King to face fraud and money laundering jury
Aiden Pleterski, also known as “Crypto King,” is facing a jury next week over fraud and money laundering charges. The trial will begin Monday and will last about four weeks. As Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru rejected his request for a delay, he will have to present himself in court. The judge added,
“I want to assure you that even though this isn’t your first choice, obviously — you will receive a fair trial…I want you to be very free in asking questions … don’t hesitate, just get up on your feet and ask me.”
As Pleterski will represent himself, Justice Shaun Nakatsuru stated that he would take on an “enhanced role” during the trial. The judge added that he would raise objections on Pleterski’s behalf when necessary. This could make sure that the jury only hears evidence that can legally be presented in the court.
From crypto investments to fraud charges
Notably, Pleterski’s legal challenges began in 2022 when his crypto and foreign exchange investment business collapsed. Investors put millions of dollars into his business thinking that they would be used to trade crypto and foreign currencies on their behalf. It was also revealed that only 2% of the total user funds had been invested. Grant Thornton, the trustee overseeing the proceedings, stated that about $16 million was spent for Pleterski’s personal use.
Soon, investors started seeking their investments back. During the summer of 2022, the Crypto King was forced to file for bankruptcy. Reportedly, investors have given him about $40 million. During the bankruptcy proceedings, about $3 million was recovered.
In May 2024, Pleterski faced criminal charges. Durham Regional Police charged him with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime. This came after an investigation into an alleged multimillion-dollar investment fraud scheme.
However, as the charges haven’t been proved in court yet, they still remain allegations. Pleterski hasn’t been found guilty, and he has reportedly denied the allegations. The potential trial will decide whether the prosecution can prove the charges against him.
Why was Pleterski kidnapped?
In a separate development, the Crypto King was kidnapped by a group of men demanding a $3 million ransom. This incident happened in late 2022, following the business’s collapse. The kidnappers were reportedly asking for the money, which they believed Pleterski had access to.
He was held captive and tortured for many days. Police later investigated the case and charged many people connected to the incident. One of the accused pleaded guilty last year.
