The latest crypto news focuses on a former FBI supervisory agent, Patrick Steven Yaroch, who is now arrested for allegedly stealing more than $1 million in digital assets connected to another crypto crime. During the investigation of a sensitive national security case, Yaroch misused his authority to obtain private crypto keys and moved the funds to his own accounts. An FBI spokesperson stated,
“As soon as the FBI became aware of these allegations, we immediately took action, began an investigation, and ultimately executed an arrest warrant for this individual last week. We hold our employees to the highest ethical standards, and this conduct is not tolerated at the FBI. We are conducting a thorough investigation in the aftermath, and as this is an ongoing matter, we will have no further comment.”
Notably, Yaroch had been working at FBI headquarters in Washington. He has served in the agency’s counterintelligence and espionage division. Now, as he is arrested for the alleged crypto crime, the former FBI agent is taken into federal custody in Alexandria, Virginia, where he is awaiting further proceedings.
Court filing reveals AI chats and travel plans
According to a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia dated August 1, 2026, Patrick Yaroch moved the stolen funds through several platforms, including crypto exchange Kraken and DeFi protocol Suilend. He also used a Slush wallet to manage and transfer the cryptocurrencies.
One of the main pieces of evidence in the case against the former FBI agent is his conversations with an AI chatbot. In one query, he asked the chatbot what someone with around $1 million should do to leave the United States and become a citizen of a European Union country. The question read, “If you had a bucket of money (around $1 million) and you wanted to leave the USA and become a resident or citizen of an EU country, what would you do?”
The filing also mentions the chatbot’s response, which suggested Portugal as a possible destination. ChatGPT’s reply was, “At 37, with a young family, a goal of potentially retiring around 40, and a clear interest in eventually building a slower-living vineyard/agricultural lifestyle in places like Cilento or Portugal’s Dão region…”
Other details that helped the investigating team were Yaroch’s travel plans. Yaroch and his family members were planning to travel to Portugal the following month. Also, he had recently travelled to Germany, Portugal, and Grenada without reporting the trips to the agency, which violates the FBI’s existing rules.
